The Fort was recently restored and reopened to the public in 2017. It is often the venue for exhibitions or classical music concerts. The fort was built in pre-Roman times and served a defensive function. In Roman and medieval times, the mountain maintained its defensive function, so much so that before the year 1000 it was the site of an important castle, destined to be represented, together with that of Botestagno, in the Cadore coat of arms. The Kingdom of Italy had two fortifications built there: Batteria Castello and the Fort, including them in the defence system against Austria-Hungary. The Fortress of Monte Ricco remained abandoned until 2007, when restoration work began at the behest of the Municipality of Pieve di Cadore, and was completed in 2017.
Arriving in the centre of Pieve di Cadore and heading towards the Museo dell’Occhiale, there is a sign on the left indicating the start of the ascent to Monte Ricco. The most convenient parking area is right in front of the Museum itself. From there, continue on foot. The route is short and very easy, just a few metres and a little difference in height and you arrive at the Fortress, an observation point for the entire Cadore valley. Along the road leading to the Fort you will pass through a beech forest where you will see some very tall and large centuries-old beeches.
