VALMO: THE MONDEVAL MAN

Mondeval, Passo Giau, San Vito di Cadore

Immersive cultural experience "Valmo, the Man of Mondeval, the last prehistoric hunter in the Belluno Dolomites"

The interactive virtual reality experience is set in the S. Vito di Cadore region, between the Giau mountains and the Mondeval de Sora basin, precisely where the body of Valmo the well-known hunter from the Mesolithic period was found. The scenes recreate the life lived by a community of hunter-gatherers, and thanks to visors, the user will find himself immersed in a high-altitude environment, not only to witness the group’s daily activities, but also with the possibility of being actively involved in certain tasks and rituals, such as the lighting of fires, hunting and the funeral ceremony of ‘Valmo’. Virtual reality is a moment that integrates into the experience of a real visit to the Giau-Mondeval area, an excursion with spectacular views of Mount Pelmo, Lago delle Baste, Lastoi de Formin, Croda da Lago and the Becco di Mezzodì, which completes the narrative of the area with a final visit to the nearby Museo Vittorino Cazzetta in Selva di Cadore, where the body of the Man of Mondeval is now preserved. The project was proposed by the Regola Generale or Granda di San Vito di Cadore, with the aim of enhancing the naturalistic and historical-archaeological heritage of the Giau-Mondeval area. The concept and scientific advice for the project were provided by the Department of Humanistic Studies of the University of Ferrara, which is also in charge of the archaeological excavations at Prà Comun in Giau.
