Mondeval, Passo Giau
Connected, at least geographically, to the historic ‘wall’, is ‘the man of Mondeval’, an archaeological discovery of exceptional value. In 1985, the burial site of a Mesolithic hunter who lived around seven thousand five hundred years ago was discovered in a large pine forest, situated at an altitude of 2150 metres, between the Pelmo massif and the ‘lastoi del Formin’, in the territory of San Vito di Cadore. “The ‘Man of Mondeval’ is now preserved in the Selva di Cadore museum. The burial site is a magnificent site of great scenic beauty.
The site can be reached from the Giau Pass by parking near the Malga Giau hut and following path no. 436 to the Forcella Giau crossroads. Then continue along path no. 466 to the Casera Mondeval De Sora where you will find the boulder that served as a shelter for ‘the man of Mondeval’. The route boasts mild inclines and is therefore also suitable for the less experienced and trained. There is a variant of path no. 436 that starts from the Passo Giau car park, which is less long but with exposed points.
