Cadore is an area entirely belonging to the mountainous area of the Dolomites. It is located in the province of Belluno, in the Veneto region. Some of the most beautiful mountains can be found here, such as Antelao, Pelmo, Marcora, and the Marmarole. This area offers many opportunities for tourists who choose it as their holiday destination every year.
On 26 June 2009, the Dolomites were declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site consisting of two of the most famous and spectacular systems:
System No. 1 Pelmo- Mondeval-Croda da Lago is dominated by the Pelmo massif, one of the most beautiful and celebrated in the Dolomites. The Pelmo, due to its peculiar shape reminiscent of a giant seat, is referred to by locals as the throne of God. Pelmo is also remembered for being the first conquest of Dolomite mountaineering, thanks to the ascent completed by Sir John Ball in 1857.
System No. 5 of the Northern Dolomites includes Mount Antelao, which dominates the entire valley and, at 3,264 m, is the second highest peak in the Dolomites after Marmolada, and is therefore also known as the King of the Dolomites, the Sorapiss group with Croda Marcora, which towers above San Vito di Cadore, and the Marmarole group (2,932 m).
The villages forming part of Cadore are: San Vito di Cadore, which lies at the foot of the Antelao and with its Lake Mosigo was chosen as the main location for the much-loved RAI TV series ‘UN PASSO DAL CIELO’ (A STEP FROM THE SKY), together with the film ‘Improvvisamente Natale’ (Suddenly Christmas) and the sequel ‘Improvvisamente a Natale mi sposo’ (Suddenly I’m getting married at Christmas). Borca di Cadore, a beautiful village that is home to the former Eni Village; Vodo di Cadore, a land of Alpine pastures, mountain huts and farms, and the birthplace of Gianpietro Talamini, founder of the Gazzettino, a well-known Triveneto newspaper. Peaio, where the inventor of the ice cream cone, Italo Pietro Marchioni, was born, along with the splendid Vinigo with the Church of San Giovanni Battista, a national monument under the supervision of the Venice Superintendency, and the famous cabbage. Cibiana identified as the Land of the Murals, paintings scattered on the walls of the houses that tell the story of life in the past. Valle di Cadore, a town with very ancient origins that is home to the eighteenth-century Church of San Martino set on a rocky spur overlooking the Boite Valley. Pieve di Cadore, the birthplace of the famous painter Titian Vecellio and a land of culture thanks to its museums and rich finds. Calalzo di Cadore with the Lagole Spring, famous for its therapeutic properties known even in ancient times. Domegge di Cadore, which stands on the shores of Lake Centro Cadore, known for its flourishing spectacle trade and the presence of numerous small churches. Perarolo di Cadore, where the Boite and Piave rivers meet, with origins dating back to the 14th century thanks to trade and timber activities, and where the first populations began to settle.
