MARC

Piazza Tiziano 2 Pieve di Cadore

The Cadore Archaeological Museum – Marc – is located in Pieve di Cadore, in the historical building that houses the headquarters of the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore. In fact, it houses pre-Roman and Roman finds of fundamental importance that make it possible to reconstruct large fragments of ancient history. The current museum preserves a remarkable archaeological collection of artefacts, especially from the stretch of land from Valle to Calalzo: the preponderant part of Marc’s current exhibition is centred on the finds from the excavations in Làgole. In the varied typology of Veneto cult sites, Làgole presents itself with characteristics of its own, being a community sanctuary, as shown by a series of inscriptions on sympula handles in which the term teuta (community) recurs, a centre of wide attendance not linked to a single village but a meeting place for different peoples. Following Làgole’s revelations, countless other finds were discovered in the following decades: in 1954, the ruins of a Roman villa from the 3rd century AD were discovered in Pieve di Cadore. Between the 1960s and 1970s, the museum was enriched by the many discoveries made in the Valle di Cadore area. The pre-Roman and Roman materials include a bronze situla with votive dedication in the Veneto language and alphabet, bronze basins and sympula handles, an amber distaff, as well as countless everyday objects such as nails, weapons, chisels and various tools. Among the materials of particular interest are iron skewers and bronze ladles attesting to the ritual practice of banqueting and libation, small bronzes of offerers, praying or warriors, bronze plates, inscribed and figured, and iron weapons.
