Pieve di Cadore
Situated on a hill at an altitude of 878 m, Pieve di Cadore is the natural gateway to the heart of the Belluno Dolomites and is only an hour and a half from Venice. The administrative and cultural fulcrum of the Cadore centre, Pieve is a town best known for its artistic, historical and literary riches.
Pieve is not lacking in natural beauty: numerous more or less demanding walks, suitable for all levels of difficulty, start from the hamlets of Pozzale, Tai, Nebbiù and Sottocastello.
For the most experienced and tireless walkers, the Vedorcia balcony offers spectacular, breathtaking views.
From the summit of Monte Ricco, where a war fort is located, it is possible to admire Lake Centro Cadore surrounded by the Spalti di Toro and the Marmarole, imposing and wild Dolomite massifs.
From the centre of Pieve you can reach Forte Montericco, located on the hill of the same name, which has been used for defensive purposes since pre-Roman times. Renovated in 2017, it hosts art exhibitions and can only be reached on foot, with a short ten-minute scenic walk.
The ‘La Lunga Via delle Dolomiti’ cycle path is a suitable route to take by bike or on foot with the whole family, choosing to head north and then towards Cortina d’Ampezzo, touching almost all the towns in the Cadore Dolomites area, or in the opposite direction, to descend towards Belluno.
In more recent history, around 1480, Pieve was the birthplace of Titian Vecellio, the great artist of Renaissance painting, who spent his childhood here. His house, an environment rich in history and memories, has original corners from the period and is still open to the public. Antonio Dal Zotto’s bronze monument from 1880 commemorates the painter in the square dedicated to him.
In 1892 Josuè Carducci spent a holiday in Pieve and on that occasion composed the ode Cadore.
In the main square is the Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità di Cadore with the MARC – Museo Archeologico Cadorino, where archaeological finds discovered in Cadore are preserved and exhibited to the public.
The Cadore Centre has distinguished itself over the years for the production and sale of spectacles. The Museo dell’Occhiale, located in the Palazzo Cos.Mo, houses around four thousand pieces that allow the history of eyewear to be reconstructed, making the museum unique.
